On the 10th of September 2024, I emailed the European Union to alert them to multiple news websites that made you pay to disable cookies, and pay £1.99 a month for a so-called 'Privacy Plus' plan.
The GDPR regulations state that users should be easily able to opt out of cookies, and these do technically let you, but not very easily.
Privacy is a basic human right, and it pisses me off when big companies try and take that. Here are the offending websites that I saw, but there are others.
Express News has this cookie message, with the aforementioned reject and pay button.
You then see a page that tells you to pay for 'Privacy Plus' for £1.99 a month, not something many are willing to pay to read news without being tracked.
Mirror News also has the same thing, as they are both part of Reach News.
